The Art of the Sea - 23 knitwear Designs inspired by the Moomins

For eighty years, the Moomins have charmed readers with their authenticity, playfulness, and warmth. Their creator, Tove Jansson, is one of the most significant figures in Nordic literature and art. With this special publication from Laine, we invite knitters to step into the world of the Moomins.

For eighty years, Tove Jansson’s Moomins have captivated readers with their originality, curiosity, and humanity. One of the most beloved figures in Nordic literature created an imaginative world that speaks gently of courage, freedom, and togetherness.

*Meren taju* transforms the world of the Moomins into knitted stitches. It draws inspiration not only from the iconic characters of the Moomin books but also from Tove’s artistry and lifestyle. The book features 23 knitting patterns by 18 talented designers from around the world.

The designs are inspired by everything from the warmth of Moominmamma’s apron and the quiet independence of Snufkin to the free-flowing sea—a powerful presence in Tove’s work. The patterns employ a variety of styles and techniques, ranging from stripes and textured stitches to cables and colorwork.

The result is a knitwear collection that radiates both comfort and a spirit of adventure—just like Moominvalley itself! And just as the Moomins speak to new generations, these knits are meant to be long-lasting companions—cherished and valued.

The patterns are created by the following designers: Pauliina Leisti, Fiona Alice, Maja Kløvdal, Alma Bali, Marie Régnier, Charlotte Stone, Julia Wilkens, Soumine Kim, Camille Romano, Dee Hardwicke, Lotta H. Löthgren, Maaike van Geijn, Paula Pereira, Sari Nordlund, Kaori Katsurada, Jihyun Seong, Olga Putano, and Karoline Skovgaard.
